On designing for longevity, the value of a fresh perspective, and a weekend of conversation at Fall Market. This October, I’m heading to High Point Market with two opportunities to take part in conversations that matter to me, both in different ways. One is about longevity: what makes a space worth living with, not just today, but years from now. The other is about perspective, and the things we notice when we step outside our own studios and into the wider design community. Both are reasons I value coming to Market. On Saturday, I’ll be joining Beth Dotolo of Pulp Design Studios, Barb Fuller of Delta Faucet Company, and Pam Durkin of James Martin Vanities for Designed to Endure: Rethinking Longevity in the Modern Bath, moderated by Kaitlin Petersen, Editor-in-Chief of Business of Home. Our conversation will explore what it means to design bathrooms with longevity in mind, from investment-worthy finishes to helping clients choose pieces they’ll want to live with for years to come. I think about this often in my own work. A material can be beautiful the day it is installed. The more important question is whether it will still feel right ten or twenty years later. That asks something different of us as designers, and of the choices we recommend. Saturday, October 17 | 10–11 AM On Sunday, I’ll be taking over High Point Market’s Instagram, sharing some of what draws my attention as I make my way through Market. For me, the value of these gatherings has never been limited to discovering something new. It is also in the conversations, the craftsmanship, the unexpected details, and the opportunity to see what other people are doing with materials and ideas. I’ll be sharing a little of that perspective throughout the day, from the showrooms I visit to the pieces and people that make me stop for a closer look. Market is a chance to spend time with the people whose work I admire, encounter ideas I might not otherwise come across, and return to the studio with a fresh perspective. I look forward to seeing familiar faces, meeting new ones, and sharing some of the experience along the way. If you’ll be at High Point, I hope our paths cross.
